FORKS TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Lafayette broke open a 1-1 tie with seven unanswered goals and knocked Bucknell out of the Patriot League Field Hockey Tournament with an 8-1 verdict Friday afternoon at Rappolt Field.
The Leopards, seeded first in the tournament and ranked 18th nationally, increased their Patriot League-record winning streak to 18 and improved to 18-2 on the season. Bucknell, seeded fourth in its first tourney appearance since 2000, finishes its season at 7-12.
Megan Monahan, the Patriot League Player of the Year, scored her 31st and 32nd goals of the season and Beth Gulotta had a hat trick for Lafayette. Stephanie Goldman opened the scoring just 1:59 into the contest, converting a feed from Monahan.
Bucknell tied it at the 16:56 mark when freshman Carli Cataldo potted an unassisted goal, her fourth tally of the season.
The game remained tied for only 57 seconds, however, as Gulotta scored off an assist from Meredith Hahn to ignite Lafayette's seven-goal surge. The Leopards led 3-1 at the half before Monahan scored twice in a three-minute span, both off penalty corners, to increase the lead.
Sonja Wettergreen made six saves for Bucknell, while Casey Devlin and Virginia Foulkrod combined for four stops in the Lafayette cage.
