LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell sophomore men's soccer player Jonathan Hemmert (Westerville, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) has been named to the 2002-03 Verizon Academic All-District II University Division Men's Soccer First Team.
With his selection to the first team, Hemmert is now eligible for national Academic All-America recognition. The national team will be voted on later this month and announced on Monday, November 25. In order to be eligible for Academic All-America honors, a player must be at least a sophomore and a starter or significant reserve on his/her team, and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better.
A starter in 12 of 16 games this season, Hemmert has made a name for himself as Bucknell's setup man. After recording no assists in his first year of play, the midfielder has racked up 10 helpers this season, good enough for third on the Bucknell all-time single-season list. With at least one game remaining, he stands just two assists shy of the school single-season record.
In addition to his assists, Hemmert has also tallied two goals this season for a team-high 14 points. One of his scores was a game-winning penalty kick to lift the Bison past then nationally-ranked Pittsburgh, 1-0.
In the classroom, Hemmert has been equally successful, maintaining a 3.85 grade point average. He is a member of the University's Dean's List and the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. In addition, he is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.
Hemmert becomes the second-straight Bucknell player to be named to the All-District Men's Soccer First Team. Ryan Weber, a 2002 graduate, was a member of the inaugural Verizon Academic All-America University Division Men's Soccer Team. Before 2002, the men's soccer scholar's were voted on as part of the Fall At-Large team.
