LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell placed four players on the All-Patriot League Football Team, including co-defensive player of the year Adam Lord (Troy, N.Y./Troy H.S.), the conference office announced Tuesday.
Lord, a senior nose guard who was also the preseason player of the year in the Patriot League, was one of three Bison named to the first team defensive unit. He joined senior outside linebacker Joe Massey (Brooklyn, N.Y./Canarsie H.S.) and junior inside linebacker Stephane Pluviose (Cliffwood Beach, N.J./Matawan Regional H.S.) on the first team.
Junior offensive tackle Rashad Stallworth (Prichard, Ala./Blount H.S.) was named to the second team all-league unit.
Fordham and Colgate, which tied for the 2002 Patriot League title, combined for 22 of the 52 all-league spots.
Despite a 2-9 final record (0-7 Patriot League), Bucknell still managed to lead the Patriot League in total defense (277.4 yards per game), and three of the Herd's key defenders were rewarded. Lord is now a three-time All-Patriot League selection, and he is looking to repeat as a First Team AFCA All-American. He is only the second Bucknell player to capture defensive player of the year honors, joining Ed Burman in 1995.
Lord finished the 2002 season with 40 tackles, including 2.5 sacks. Those numbers do not tell his whole story, however, as Lord excels at occupying opposing blockers while his teammates come forward to stuff the run. Bucknell ranked second in the Patriot League and 11th nationally in rush defense, allowing 99.4 yards per game.
Lord and Lafayette offensive lineman Chris Royle are the only members of the 2002 all-league class to be named for a third time.
Massey, who was a first-team choice for the second straight year, is one of the Patriot League's most feared pass rushers. He had 4.5 sacks and 12 tackles for loss among his 44 total tackles in 2002. He also forced a pair of fumbles and blocked a field goal. With 22.5 career sacks, Massey ranks third in Bucknell history and 10th in Patriot League annals.
Pluviose is a first-time all-conference selection. An athletic linebacker with a nose for the football, Pluviose was Bucknell's leading tackler for the second straight season, racking up 89 stops in 11 games. He ranked sixth in the Patriot League in tackles and second in fumble recoveries with three. He also logged 1.5 sacks, eight tackles for loss and an interception.
Stallworth started all 11 games at the key left tackle position and was widely considered Bucknell's best offensive lineman. It was Stallworth's first all-conference citation.
Fordham, which will be headed to the Division I-AA Playoffs based on a head-to-head victory over Colgate, garnered two of the four major award winners in player of the year Kirwin Watson and coach of the year Bill Clawson. Colgate linebacker Tem Lukabu was co-defensive player of the year alongside Lord, while Holy Cross running back Gideon Akande was the league's rookie of the year.
