LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshman Eric Brunton found the back of the net with just under eight minutes left in the game, and it would prove to be enough as the Bucknell men's soccer team defeated Army, 1-0, in the final game of the season for both teams. With the win, the Bison set a new school record for wins in a season with their 13th victory of the year in front of a Homecoming crowd of 512. The only standard of 12 was set in 1974, and matched in 1982 and 1990.
Bucknell rattled off 18 shots in the second half, but could only convert on the Brunton score. Senior Brian Johnson, playing in his final collegiate game, found the rookie just outside the box. Brunton dribbled and fired a shot that curved to the back left corner for the Bucknell lead at 82:15. It was Johnson's first assist of the season, and Brunton's fourth score.
The Bison took 26 shots in the game, forcing Army goalkeeper Kevin Larrabee to make eight saves, in the process breaking the West Point career saves record.
Bucknell freshman goalkeeper Adam Edwards sustained a string of Army shots early in the second period, making several nice stops on the way to recording his 10th shutout of the season. That number ties the Orange and Blue school record for shutouts in a campaign.
Bucknell concludes the 2002 season with a final record of 13-5-1 and 3-4-0 in the Patriot League. The Black Knights finish their year at 3-11-4, 1-4-2 in the conference.
