STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Sixth-ranked Penn State proved to be a rude host Tuesday evening, dealing Bucknell an 8-0 setback in a non-league field hockey contest between two Central Pennsylvania neighbors.
The Bison saw their two-game winning streak come to a halt and fell to 5-7 overall, while the Nittany Lions improved to 10-1.
Mary Schaefer and Neilye Stoner scored twice apiece to lead Penn State's potent attack. PSU scored five times on 27 shots in the first half, while holding the Bison without a shot. Timarie Legel, Jill Martz, Kelly Concini and Karin Grap also scored for the Lions.
Bucknell managed three shots, putting two on goal. Kirsten Nilsen had two shots and Meiko Boynton one. Sonja Wettergreen logged 11 saves in the Bison cage, while Liz Jordan made two saves and allowed one goal after entering the game with 27:49 to play. Bison defender Kate Ruda made two defensive saves.
Head coach Heather Lewis used her entire bench and felt her younger players gained quality experience playing a top-10 opponent.
The Bison return to action this Friday with a non-conference home game against Quinnipiac at 7 p.m.
