Easton, Pa. - The Bucknell men's soccer team gave up the lone goal of the game in the 73rd minute and dropped a 1-0 road decision to Lafayette on Wednesday night in Patriot League action. The game was carried live on the Bison Sports Network on WMLP-1380AM and over the internet at www.BucknellBison.com.
In the first half, Bucknell and Lafayette each managed four shots, as the two teams combined for just 10 in the game, due in large part to extremely sloppy playing conditions that led to poor footing. The teams battled through near-freezing temperatures and constant sleet.
Nearly half way through the second half, Lafayette senior Paulo Coelho broke a scoreless tie. Victor Krasij got the scoring play going, passing the ball to Chris Browne who then served it to a streaking Coelho who knocked it in on first touch side volley at 73:54. The goal, Coelho's fourth game-winner of the season, would hold up.
The Bucknell offense had legitimate scoring opportunites in both halves. The Bison took a direct kick just outside the box at the 18-minute mark and also had two corner kicks in the final 20 minutes of the game. Sophomore midfielder Jonathan Hemmert led the Bison with two shots.
Freshman goalkeeper Adam Edwards was strong between the pipes, recording three saves in 90 minutes. His Lafayette (7-4-2, 2-1-1) counterpart, Mike Tortora, played all 90 minutes in goal, making just one save, a diving stop in the opening half.
Bucknell, which falls to 11-4-1 overall and 1-4 in conference play, returns to action on Sunday at 2 p.m. when the Bison host Navy.
