LEWISBURG, Pa. - Junior Chris Beekman tallied in the 25th minute of play, and that lone goal would stand, as the Bucknell men's soccer team defeated Mount St. Mary's 1-0 on Sunday, October 27. With the win, the Bison remained unbeaten at home for the 2002 season with a 5-0-1 record in Lewisburg.
The Orange and Blue were awarded three corner kicks in a span of less than two minutes in the opening half. On the third one, sophomore Jonathan Hemmert crossed the ball in front of the cage. The Mount defense staved off the first wave, but sophomore Michael Lookingland collected the rebound and fired a shot on goal. Beekman was there to redirect it into the back of the net for his third score of the season at 24:44.
Mount St. Mary's actually outshot BU, 8-5, in the second stanza, and 14-13 for the game, but could not manage to get a ball past a Bucknell defense that has now posted eight shutouts on the year. Freshman goalkeeper Adam Edwards made four stops in the contest. The Mount keeper Brian Crum also stopped four Bison shots.
With the victory, the Orange and Blue improve to 11-3-1 overall, marking only the fifth time in the history of the program that a squad has reached 11 wins. The Bison are in action next when they travel to Lafayette on Wednesday, October 30, for a crucial Patriot League game against the Leopards. The game, which will be broadcast live on the internet and WMLP-1380 AM, is slated to kickoff at 7:00 p.m.
Mount St. Mary's falls to 5-8-3 overall.
