LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshman field hockey player Kelly O'Brien made the final home game of her rookie season a memorable one, scoring both goals in Bucknell's 2-1 Patriot League victory over Fairfield on Saturday, October 26, 2002. It was the second-straight league victory for the Bison.
O'Brien put the Orange and Blue on the board just 2:23 into the contest when she pounded home a pass from sophomore Cara Turner for the 1-0 lead. Bucknell managed seven shots in the half but could only convert on the early O'Brien score.
The Stags evened it when they capitalized on a penalty corner opportunity with 5:40 left in the opening stanza. Dani Brown tallied her ninth score of the season, smacking the ball past Bison goalkeeper Sonja Wettergreen. Rebecca Odenwaelder was credited with the assist on the play.
The Bucknell offense dominated in the second half, outshooting Fairfield 10-4 in the frame. With 5:43 to go, O'Brien notched her second score of the game to break the 1-1 deadlock. Senior Amy Marvel, playing in her final home game, passed the ball to a waiting O'Brien for the final score of the contest.
Wettergreen stopped nine Stags shots in her final home appearance. Fairfield keeper Lauren Thomas made 14 saves in the game.
