LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell's women's swimming and diving have been selected to place second in the 2003 Patriot League Championship. The Bison tallied 87 points, and six first place nods, among the league's head coaches and sports information directors during the preseason poll.
Nominated to place first, in front of the Bison, was the Midshipmen of Navy. The Mids, who received 91 points and eight first place votes, look to defend their title. Bucknell, the host of the Patriot League Championship, will start the season competing against Navy and American. The pre-season poll tabbed American to finish third in the 2003 campaign.
Jerry Foley, the 2002 Women's Head Coach of the Year, mentioned, "We have had a strong showing at championships in the past two years, which will give the team strength to continue strong and develop. Bucknell also has the advantage of having all the men's and women's teams train together in the new aquatics complex, which will increase the energy and enthusiasm of the team."
The Orange and Blue, led by head coach Jerry Foley, return to the pool with 20 returning letterwinners. Senior co-captains Becky Dolan and Darby Golino, who is a three-time All-League performer, will guide the team through the 2002-03 season. Other prominent returning performers for the Bison include juniors Daniela Faas, Meghan Freese, and Jennifer Cancro
Bucknell will open their schedule with the annual Blue vs. Orange scrimmage on Friday, Oct. 25. The Bison will sponsor a sprint invitational meet Nov. 9 and then begin competition against Patriot League opponents American, Navy, and Army. In January and early February, the Bison will play host to Lafayette and Lehigh. At the end of February, Bucknell will host the Patriot League Championships in the new natatorium.
