Bucknell Women's Tennis Competes at Patriot League Individual Tournament

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Bucknell women's tennis team completed the first day of competition at the 2002 Patriot League Individual Flighted Tournament, held at Army on Saturday and Sunday, October 19-20. Freshmen Veronica Brown and Rheanna Gaskin have both advanced to the finals round in singles play.
Brown, playing at the number two flight, opened competition with a convincing 6-0, 6-0 win against Maria del Carmen Anorga of Lehigh. She followed that with a 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-4 upset victory over top-seeded Kristina Georgieva of American to advance to the finals.
Gaskin entered play as the number one seed at the fifth flight and defended her seed with a 2-6, 7-5, 6-0 battle against Colgate's Jessica Fede to make it in to the finals round.
Also seeded first for the Bison in singles play were senior Jill Wurzburg at number four and junior Samantha Berthod at number six. Wurzburg nearly made it out of the semi-final round, dropping a tough 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 5-7 decision to American's Ashley Retlev.
In doubles play, the duo of sophomores Nadezda Curcic and Ashley Diers entered the competition as the second seed at the second flight and received a bye on the first day of play.
The third flight doubles tandem of sophomore Tanya Sichko and Wurzburg advanced to Sunday with an 8-1 victory over their opponents from Lehigh.
Play resumes on Sunday, October 20, 2002.
