FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Bucknell men's soccer team got back on the winning side with a 2-1 win at Sacred Heart on Sunday, October 13. The Bison built a 2-0 halftime lead and held on in the second en route to the one-goal victory.
Sophomore Jonathan Hemmert opened the scoring at 31:56 when he blasted a shot from 35-yards out over the outstretched hands of SHU goalkeeper Jason Roeder for a 1-0 lead. Freshman Eric Brunton was credited with an assist on the play. Just three minutes later, Hemmert served a perfect ball to the far post where sophomore Michael Lookingland got his head on it and Brunton nailed home the deflection for the 2-0 advantage.
The Orange and Blue looked to be in complete control but would have to buckle down on defense when Pioneer forward Franco Cartiera cut the lead in half just over four minutes into the second frame. Cartiera settled a Nick Loyd pass about 20-yards out and fired his shot over Bison goalie Adam Edwards in the top-right corner. The Bucknell defense held the host team in check the remainder of the contest, despite being outshot, 9-8, in the frame.
With the win, BU improves to 9-2-1 overall. The Bison are in action next when they travel to St. Francis (Pa.) on Tuesday, October 15, for a 4:00 p.m. game against the Red Flash. Sacred Heart falls to 0-10-2.
