Bucknell Men's Water Polo Gets Two Wins at Claremont Convergence

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Bucknell men's water polo team got back on the winning side with two victories on the first day of the Claremont Convergence on October 11, 2002. The Bison defeated Pomona-Pitzer, 15-7, before handing Claremont-Mudd-Scripps a 9-4 loss. Both schools are the co-hosts of the tournament.
Against Pomona-Pitzer, the number nine Division III school in the country, the Orange and Blue got four goals from senior Daniel Lonnerdal to lead the way. Junior Jamie Saettele contributed with three scores and two assists to lead the squad with five points. Other multiple goal scorers were senior Chris Saxton and sophomore Elliot Benoist with two goals a piece.
Sophomore Ernest Martin played the entire game in goal, recording eight saves, while also collecting two steals and one assist.
In the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps game, the Bison were facing the seventh-ranked Division III program in the nation. Lonnerdal continued his offensive explosion, scoring three times and assisting on one goal. Benoist was the set-up man in this contest, handing out four assists.
Bucknell's defense proved important against the Stags as six different players recorded more than one steal, led by freshmen Brad Unroe with five. Martin was in net for BU, stopping five shots and grabbing three steals.
The Bison improve to 5-9 overall and face Occidental in the first game of the day on Saturday, October 12, at 1:00 p.m. ET. The Orange and Blue finish play in California with a 9:00 p.m. ET contest against the number one Division III team in the country, Redlands.
