LEWISBURG, Pa. - Marty Schaetzle, a former Bucknell grid standout and most recently the Bison's offensive coordinator, has been named the head football coach at Mercyhurst College, announced Mercyhurst director of athletics Pete Russo on Friday.
A 1983 Bucknell graduate and co-captain of the 1982 Bison football squad, Schaetzle had been a member of Tom Gadd's coaching staff for the last five years, including the last three as offensive coordinator. He won the George Rieu Award as Bucknell's most outstanding lineman 1981 and 1982, and he won the 1983 Edward Pangburn Award, given to a senior athlete for "sportsmanship, fellowship and contribution to the University."
Including stops at Albany, Arizona State, Sonoma State, Northern Arizona, Shippensburg and Bucknell, Schaetzle has been involved in coaching at the collegiate level since 1983. This is his first head coaching position.
Mercyhurst, a member of the Division II Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, is coming off a 2-7 campaign in 2001. Schaetzle replaces Joe Kimball, who resigned his head coaching post in November after a nine-year stint with the Lakers.
Bucknell is currently undergoing a national search for Schaetzle's replacement. The Bison were 6-4 in 2001.
