HAMILTON, N.Y. - Junior Kate Franks (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer, but it was too little, too late as the Bucknell women's basketball team fell to Colgate, 84-81, in Hamilton, N.Y. on Wednesday evening. Junior Molly Creamer (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) led all players with 23 points to surpass the 1,400-point mark in her career. She becomes just the third player in school history to accumulate over 1,400 points.
Both teams opened the contest with three-pointers from their leading scorers, but it was Colgate which took control of the game, taking a 15-point lead (38-23) with 5:28 left in the half. The Bison were outrebounded, 22-14, in the frame, including a 15-7 disadvantage on the defensive glass.
The Orange and Blue battled back from a four-point deficit (19-15) to tie the contest at 21-21, but Colgate proceeded to hold Bucknell scoreless for over three minutes, while mounting a 10-0 run to lead 31-21 with 8:30 to play. The Raiders went on to outscore the Bison 17-2 over a six-minute span to take their largest lead of the stanza at 38-23. Bucknell fought back to within 10 on three separate occasions, but Colgate entered the intermission with an 11-point lead, 50-39.
Bucknell came out on fire in the second, cutting the Raiders lead to three, 58-55, with just under 14 minutes left in the game. Colgate continued to fight, however, and ripped off 10 unanswered to go back ahead by 13, 68-55, at the 11:07 mark. The host team led 72-59 with 5:24 in the game, but the Orange and Blue went on a run of their own, outscoring the Raiders 13-2 over a three minute stretch to get it to two, 74-72, with 2:42 to play. The Bison made several defensive stops and had the opportunity to take the lead, but could not convert.
Colgate finally broke out of a four minute scoring slump with a Leandra Fuller jumper with 38 ticks on the clock, going ahead 76-72. The score stood at 78-75 in the Raiders favor after a layup by senior Kate Rounsley (Lock Haven, Pa./Lock Haven) with 13 seconds remaining, but the Bison were forced to foul and Colgate connected on all eight free throws in the final 20 seconds of the contest to seal the victory. The host team led 84-78 before Franks' three-pointer at the buzzer created the final deficit of 84-81.
The loss snaps Bucknell's six-game win streak and moves the Bison to 11-7 overall and into a tie with Lehigh, 68-60 winners over American, atop the Patriot League standings at 4-1. Colgate improves to 9-10 overall and 3-2 in conference action. Bucknell will face Lehigh on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
