ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Sophomore Desire Almind (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional) matched her season-high with 17 points, and three other Bucknell women's basketball players were in double figures, as the Bison squad defeated Navy, 69-52, in Annapolis on Saturday afternoon.
The victory, Bucknell's fourth straight, improves the Orange and Blue to 9-6 overall and 2-0 in the Patriot League. Navy falls to 8-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
Both teams played sluggishly to start the game with Navy clinging to a one-point lead, 15-14, with 8:10 left in the half. The Mids built a four-point advantage, their largest of the contest, on a three-point play a minute later, but the Bison responded with a 10-2 run to turn the deficit into a four-point lead for themselves. Navy scored six unanswered to go ahead 26-24 with just under two minutes left in the frame, but Bucknell closed a 6-0 run with a Vicki Quimby (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) layup with two seconds left to carry a 30-26 lead into the intermission.
Bucknell carried its momentum into the second half, opening up a nine-point lead, 39-30, just over two minutes into the stanza. The Bison extended their advantage to as many as 13, 51-38, with 10 minutes left to play, but the Mids came marching back to get within six, 52-46, with 5:23 left on the clock. The Orange and Blue were held without a field goal for over five minutes during the Navy run, and held a 54-48 lead with over four minutes remaining.
Navy's Nikki Curtis hit two free throws with 2:04 left in the game to get the Mids within eight, but Bucknell outscored the host team, 11-2, to close out the game with the 69-52 victory.
Almind led the way with her 17 points, joined by junior Molly Creamer (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham), Quimby and Kate Franks (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) in double-figures. Creamer tallied the third double-double of her career, scoring 16 points and handing out 10 assists. Quimby chipped in 15 markers, while Franks scored 12 points and led the squad with a career-best eight rebounds.
Bucknell tri-captain Monique LeBlanc (Cumberland, R.I./Bishop Feehan), who spent most of the game defending the Patriot League's leading scorer, Courtney Davidson, recorded three steals and helped to hold Davidson to a season-low nine points. Bryanna Herring was Navy's only player in double-figures with 10 points. Navy shot just 28.8% from the floor, 22.2% from three-point territory.
Bucknell returns home to host Army in a 5:15 p.m. conference matchup on Wednesday, February 16.
