LEWISBURG, Pa. - Junior Molly Creamer (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) could not miss in the second half, scoring 23 of her school and Patriot League record 43 points in the frame, as the Bucknell women's basketball team defeated visiting Army, 79-69, in conference action on Wednesday evening.
Creamer entered the contest needing just four three-pointers to become Bucknell's all-time career leader, and she reached that plateau with four treys in the opening half. The 5-10 guard ended the game with eight three-pointers, setting a Bucknell record for three's in a single-game and giving her 102 in her career, five more than the previous career record. In addition to setting a school and conference record with 43 points, she also tied the Bucknell and Patriot League marks with 16 field goals in the contest.
The former Bucknell single-game scoring record was held by 1989 graduate Jen Walz, who tallied 40 points on two separate occasions. The Patriot League record stood at 38 points by three different players.
The Bison got their first six points from sophomore Desire Almind (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional) to lead 6-4 just two minutes into it. Army took over, scoring six unanswered to go up 10-6 two minutes later, before Creamer's first three-pointer of the night cut the visitors lead to one, 10-9. The game went back and forth for the next nine minutes with neither team holding more than a three point lead, before the Cadets put together another 6-0 run to go ahead by seven, 31-24, with five minutes left in the half. The Bison got within one, 35-34, after five straight from Creamer, but Army carried a 40-36 lead into halftime.
Army was hot in the frame, hitting 61.5% (16-26) of its shots to Bucknell's 41.2% (14-34).
Creamer came out hot in the second, making 9-of-10 shots from the floor and 4-of-4 from three-point territory. Army built its lead to seven, 46-39, with 16:32 left in the frame, but Creamer scored seven-straight for the Bison to get within two, and a Kate Rounsley (Lock Haven, Pa./Lock Haven) layup with 12:17 to play tied the score 50-50. The Orange and Blue mounted a 10-4 run to take a six-point lead, but the Cadets came storming back by outscoring Bucknell 10-5 over the next 2:20 to get within one. Bucknell scored the next seven points, but Army would not quit, fighting back to within three, 72-69, with just 2:26 left in the contest. Creamer and classmate Kate Franks (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) combined to score the game's final seven points as the Orange and Blue held the Cadets scoreless for the remainder of the game to come away with the 79-69 victory.
The Bison improve to 10-6 overall and 3-0 in the Patriot League. Bucknell travels to conference newcomer, American, for a 3:30 p.m. game against the Eagles on Saturday, January 19. Army falls to 6-10 overall and 1-2 in conference action.
