Bucknell won its second straight game, 38-6 over St. Mary's in the 2001 home opener before a Parents' Weekend crowd of 7,827 at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium ... the Bison scored their most points in a game since a 42-30 win over Lafayette last October, and held an opposing team in single digits for the first time since a 33-0 blanking of Towson in 1997 ... that was also the last time Bucknell did not allow a touchdown ... despite the 38-point outburst, Bucknell's defense was the story ... St. Mary's entered the game leading all of Division I-AA in rushing at 426.7 yards per game, but the Gaels managed only 108 rushing yards and 223 total yards in the game ... after Ezequiel Arevalo's 22-yard field goal gave St. Mary's a 6-0 lead with 8:05 left in the second quarter, the Gaels did not cross midfield again until the final minute of the game ... after averaging scoring 84 points in its two prior contests, St. Mary's was held without a touchdown for the first time in 23 games ... the Bison defense forced five turnovers and stopped the Gaels on 14 of 15 third-down tries ... CB Anthony Lewis, DT Eric Storm, OLB Juan Morales and SS Virgil Rush all recovered fumbles, while DT Gary Carruthers notched his first career interception ... the Bison converted the five takeaways into 21 points ... Morales, OLB Joe Massey and DT Tom Kuhn all recorded sacks ... Massey had six tackles, including three behind the line of scrimmage, and forced a fumble before leaving the game with a shoulder injury in the third quarter ... NG Adam Lord and FS Bobby Young made a game-high eight tackles each ... Bucknell QB Todd Wenrich shook off a 1-for-9 start and finished with 13 completions in 30 attempts for 198 yards ... Wenrich was intercepted once (Bucknell's only turnover of the day) but tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass to WR Jim Horan in the third quarter and rushed for a 2-yard TD with 15 seconds remaining in the first half, giving Bucknell a 14-6 lead at intermission ... Horan had a game-high six catches for 80 yards ... freshman QB Cole Ciesnolevicz made his collegiate debut in a mop-up role late in the fourth quarter ... RB Jabu Powell was held under 100 yards rushing for the first time this season (21-66), but his 7-yard TD run with 2:20 remaining in the second quarter gave Bucknell its first lead of the day, 7-6 ... Powell surpassed the 2,500-yard plateau for his career and now has 2,533 lifetime rushing yards ... RB Jess Brinson scored his first two rushing touchdowns of the season in the fourth quarter ... PK Chris Lundberg kicked his fifth field goal in three games, a 33-yard boot early in the fourth quarter ... Lundberg also hit the very top of the left upright on a 41-yard attempt in the first period ... P Billy Windle had his finest game of the season ... Windle booted a season-long 54-yard punt and downed two boots inside the 20, including one "pooch" punt at the St. Mary's 1-yard line ... the game was the first on Mathewson Stadium's new "FieldTurf" ... Bucknell is now 3-0 all-time against St. Mary's and 7-0 in home openers under head coach Tom Gadd ... next week the Bison become the final Patriot League team to play a conference game, hosting Towson at 1 p.m.
