PRINCETON, N.J. - The Bucknell men's water polo team continued its struggles against nationally ranked teams, as the 20th-ranked Bison fell to 17th-ranked Harvard, 7-2, and 13th-ranked Massachusetts, 13-5, on Saturday at the North/South Invitational at Princeton. The Orange and Blue ended the day on a strong note, however, defeating Iona 9-8 in their final game of the evening.
Against Harvard, senior co-captain Ryan McCarty (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Country Day) had a hand in both of Bucknell's goals, scoring one and assisting on the other. Sophomore Jamie Saettele (St. Louis, Mo./Ladue Horton Watkins) was BU's other goal scorer in the contest, also grabbing one steal and recording one ejection drawn. Senior co-captain David Kennedy (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Country Day) recorded 13 saves in the game.
The Orange and Blue then faced a very tough Massachusetts team, falling to the Minutemen, 13-5. McCarty was an offensive threat again, scoring two of Bucknell's five goals. Junior Daniel Lonnerdal (Davis, Calif./Davis) also tallied two scores in the contest, along with one assist and two steals. Saettele got involved in the offensive effort, scoring once and assisting on another goal. He played a solid game all around for BU, recording four ejections drawn and one steal on defense. Kennedy stopped nine shots for the Bison, while freshman Ernest Martin (Winchester, Calif./Perris) saw time for one quarter, stopping one shot and allowing one goal.
In the third game of the day, a tired Bucknell team took on Iona, coming away with a 9-8 win. It was the first time the Orange and Blue have defeated Iona since the 1999 season. Lonnerdal turned up his offense in the contest, scoring four goals on four attempts. McCarty continued his solid play on the weekend, tallying three points in the win on two goals and one assist. Also scoring twice and helping on another was freshman James Danforth (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos), who finished the game with three steals as well. In goal, Kennedy was solid with 14 saves, including a blocked four-meter shot in the final 1:30 that would have tied the game.
The Bison are 4-6 overall and will take on St. Francis N.Y. at 8:30 a.m. Sunday morning.
