LEWISBURG, Pa. - Junior Steve Feather (Maryville, Texas/Maryville) was the fifth different player to score for the Bucknell men's soccer team, tallying the first goal of his career with less than five minutes remaining to cap a 5-1 victory for the squad in front of an impressive Parents' Weekend crowd on Saturday. With the win, the Bison, 2-4 overall, remain undefeated at home in 2001.
Junior Elliott Maruffi-Cowley (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) got Bucknell on the board just eight minutes into the contest when he capitalized on a corner kick and put the ball in the left corner. Freshmen Greg Buzzell (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) and Ori Adrabi (West Hills, Calif./El Camino Real) were both given credit for an assist on the play. Nearly eight minutes later, Adrabi took a cross from sophomore Chris Beekman (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) to give the Orange and Blue a 2-0 cushion just 15:54 into the contest.
Continuing BU's offensive outbreak was rookie Michael Lookingland II (Fallston, Md./Loyola), who made it 3-0 with his second goal of the season, an unassisted shot with 18:02 gone in the game. Beekman tallied at 31:01 to give the Bison, who led 9-1 in shots in the first half, a 4-0 lead heading into the second half. Junior Nick Taylor (Fairview Park, Ohio/St. Ignatius) and senior Ryan Weber (Longmont, Colo./Niwot) combined for the assist on the play.
Sacred Heart got its only score of the contest when a Bucknell foul in the box awarded the Pioneers a penalty kick. In what was a very physical game with a combined 42 fouls and nine yellow cards between the two teams, Sacred Heart's Franco Cartiera made the most of the situation, shooting the ball past a diving Kevin Clifford (Marlton, N.J./Holy Cross) in the lower left corner.
With the 4-1 lead, Feather added the insurance goal at 85:02 to stake Bucknell to the 5-1 victory. Junior Tom Ryan (Pine City, N.Y./Elmira Southside) dribbled the ball up the field before lobbing it to senior captain Andrew Aurand (Middleburg, Pa./Middleburg), who crossed in front of an open net for Feather.
Clifford recorded one save in his first start of the season. Sophomore Keith Sheldon (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) played the final 9:45 of the contest, recording two saves. Sacred Heart's Gustavo Reaes stopped two BU shots.
The five goals scored was Bucknell's highest offensive output since September of 1999 when the Orange and Blue defeated St. Francis (Pa.) 5-4 in double overtime. The four-goal margin of victory was BU's largest since a 4-0 win over Long Island University in October of 1996.
The Bison, holding a 15-5 advantage in shots, are in action again on Wednesday when they travel to Philadelphia University for a 4 p.m. contest.
