LEWISBURG, Pa. - Junior goalie Sonja Wettergreen made 11 saves en route to her third shutout of the year, and senior Dena Ebert tallied the game's lone goal in Bucknell's 1-0 victory over Ursinus in a Patriot League field hockey contest Wednesday at West Field.
Winners of three of their last five outings - all one-goal affairs -- the Bison improved to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in the Patriot League. The previous four games were decided in sudden death, the longest streak of overtime games in school history.
Wettergreen made sure this game would not require extra time when, with Bucknell clinging to a 1-0 lead, she stoned the Bears' Julie Lowell with a terrific point-blank kick save. The Bison netminder recorded six of her season-high 11 saves in the second half and lowered her season goals-against average to a paltry 0.85.
After being outshot 5-3 in the opening half, Bucknell increased the pressure in the second half, peppering the Bears net for 11 shots. Ursinus goalie Nicole Monatesti stopped all of them but one, Ebert's swipe at a loose ball during a goal-mouth scramble with 23:03 remaining in regulation. The goal was Ebert's fourth of the season and 32nd of her career.
Sophomore defender Kate Ruda nearly put the Bison on the board six minutes prior to Ebert's goal. Ruda's blast from the top of the circle snuck through the pads of Monatesti but just trickled wide of the cage. Lisa Bingaman just missed adding an insurance goal with six minutes remaining when she broke in alone on goal and stickhandled around the fallen goalkeeper, but backchecking Ursinus midfielder Amy Midgley snuffed out the play on the goal line.
Lowell had six of Ursinus' 11 shots in the game, including several good scoring opportunities in the second half. The Bears had six penalty corners in the second half to Bucknell's two but could not convert. Ursinus also had a 7-5 edge in penalty corners for the game, while Bucknell outshot its guests 14-11.
Bucknell has beaten Ursinus (2-7, 0-2) six straight times. The Orange & Blue face another Patriot League foe on Saturday when they travel to Lehigh for a 3 p.m. contest.
