LEWISBURG, Pa. - Sophomore Jamie Saettele (St. Louis, Mo./Ladue Horton Watkins) scored with 1:49 left in the contest and freshman Aaron Platshon (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo School) made a crucial steal with 17 seconds left to preserve the victory as the Bucknell men's water polo team defeated George Washington in Collegiate Water Polo Association action on Sunday. The Bison fell to 14th ranked Princeton earlier in the day, 9-5, before beating George Washington 8-7.
Against the nationally ranked Tigers, the young Bucknell squad showed signs of maturity as they battled Princeton to a 6-5 score to end the third quarter down by just one. Trailing 4-1 early in the second, the Orange and Blue outscored the visitors 4-2 over the next 10 minutes of game time to get within one. It was all Princeton in the fourth quarter, however, as the Tigers scored three unanswered to come away with the 9-5 victory. Freshman Elliot Benoist (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Country Day) and Saettele had two goals each in the contest. Senior co-captain David Kennedy (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Country Day) was stellar in goal, making 18 saves for BU.
Bucknell and George Washington battled back and forth the entire game. The Bison only trailed once in the contest, falling behind 1-0 early in the first quarter, but the game featured six ties. The largest lead the Orange and Blue enjoyed was a two-goal advantage in the third quarter when freshman Nick Ferring (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Country Day) scored with 1:55 left in the frame to make it 6-4 in Bucknell's favor. The Colonials scored two unanswered to tie it up at 6-6 in the fourth and the two teams went back and forth before Saettele's goal with a 1:49 left put the Bison ahead to stay. Saettelle ended the game with two goals and three steals, while senior co-captain Ryan McCarty (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Country Day) finished with a team-high three scores and four steals. Kennedy had another solid outing in net, stopping 17 George Washington shots.
Bucknell stands at 3-4 overall on the season and 2-2 in CWPA action. The Bison will be in action again on Saturday and Sunday, September 27-28, at the North/South Invitational at Princeton.
