Bucknell Women's Tennis Players Fare Well at Bucknell Invitational

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshman Tanya Sichko (Boulder, Colo./Fairview) had an impressive debut, finishing as the champion in Flight C singles action at the women's tennis Bucknell Invitational, held Saturday and Sunday, September 22-23. Overall, Sichko and two Bucknell doubles teams made it to the championship match on Sunday in what was the team's first action of the fall.
At Flight A singles, freshmen Nadezda Curcic (Serbia/3rd Belgrade) and Ashley Diers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Country Day) enjoyed solid outings on the weekend. Curcic went 2-2 on the weekend with a 1-1 performance on Sunday. She defeated Amanda Doetsch of Marist, 8-3, before falling 9-7 to Marist's Diana Perachio to end her singles day. Diers went 2-0 on Sunday after a 1-1 day on Saturday. She picked up large victories over Loyola's Carolyn Pilkington, 8-1, and Pittsburgh's Jill Williams, 8-2. In doubles action, the rookie duo faced Georgetown's Jordan Botjer and Chelsea Kammerer in the championship match, falling 8-0 for second place.
Sophomore Samantha Berthod (White Plains, N.Y./Ursuline Academy) and senior captain Kristin Inglis (Huntington, N.Y./Saint Anthony) were Bucknell's representatives at singles Flight B and at the Flight B doubles slot. In singles action, Berthod posted a 2-2 overall record on the weekend. On Sunday, she dropped an 8-4 decision to Kaitlin Russo of Loyola before ending the day with an 8-3 victory over St. Joseph's Jill Simondejka. Inglis also went 2-2 in singles play, going 2-0 on Sunday. She opened play with an 8-2 win against Kara Bliss of Marist and defeated Jena Fiore of Pittsburgh, 8-3, for her final singles match. In doubles action, the pair dropped an 8-1 decision to Villanova to go 1-2 for the tournament.
Sichko and sophomore Kristen Pugno (Montclair, N.J./Montclair Kimberley Academy) teamed up at Flight C doubles and each played in the Flight C singles bracket. Sichko ended the weekend 4-0 in singles action, going 2-0 on Sunday to claim the Flight C title. The rookie defeated Kelly McAndrew of Villanova, 6-3, 5-7 (3) to start the day and then handled Georgetown's Lara Madonia, 6-2, 6-4 in the championship match. Pugno fell to Gina Turturiello of Loyola, 8-3, before dropping an 8-3 decision to Marist's Jennifer Edwards. In doubles play, the duo advanced to the championship match, falling 8-3 to Pittsburgh's Jena Fiore and Hayley Hughes for second place.
In the final singles bracket, freshmen Christine Hill (St. Davids, Pa./Agnes) and Jennifer Perrin (Boswell, Pa./Somerset) were the Bucknell competitors today. Hill finished the weekend 1-3, going 1-1 on Sunday. She dropped an 8-2 match to Alisa Payros of St. Joseph's before ending the tournament with a victory over Jamie Lomas of St. Joseph's. Perrin stepped in to play on Sunday, replacing freshman Margaret Williams (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield). Perrin lost 8-3 to Lomas before falling, 8-5, to Payros.
The women's tennis team is in action again on Saturday, October 6, when it travels to St. Joseph's for a dual match beginning at 12:00 noon.
