Bison Women's Tennis Team Remains Undefeated in Fall Season

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshman Tanya Sichko (Boulder, Colo./Fairview) continued her solid play in the fall season, improving to 7-0 in singles action as the Bison defeated both Niagara, 6-1, and St. Francis (Pa.), 6-0, on Saturday. Bucknell improves its dual match record for the fall to 3-0.
Against Niagara, the Orange and Blue picked up the doubles point with a clean sweep. Freshmen Nadezda Curcic (Serbia/3rd Belgrade) and Ashley Diers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Country Day) started things with an 8-2 victory at first doubles. Sophomore Samantha Berthod (White Plains, N.Y./Ursuline Academy) and senior captain Kristin Inglis (Huntington, N.Y./Saint Anthony) also handled their competition at second doubles, picking up an 8-1 victory. Sichko and sophomore Kristen Pugno (Montclair, N.J./Montclair Kimberley Academy) had a harder time at third doubles, but came out on top, 9-7.
In singles action, Curcic suffered a 3-6, 1-6 setback at the first flight, but it was all Bucknell from there as the second through sixth singles players won their matches to give BU the 6-1 victory.
Due to time constraints in the St. Francis (Pa.) match, no doubles matches were contested. The Orange and Blue proved impressive in their second match of the day, taking all six singles matches. Most notable were the performances of Sichko and Pugno at fifth and sixth singles, respectively. Sichko defeated her Red Flash opponent, 6-0, 6-0, to win her seventh consecutive match. In fact, the rookie has not lost a singles match to date. Pugno also won 6-0, 6-0 over her opponent.
Bucknell is in action again on Saturday and Sunday, October 20-21, when it travels to Lehigh for the Patriot League Individual Championship Tournament.
