LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's water polo team split a pair of games on Saturday, September 22, while hosting the first set of Collegiate Water Polo Association League Games. The Bison opened the weekend with an 11-10 victory over Johns Hopkins before falling to 12th ranked Navy, 9-3, in the nightcap. The Orange and Blue are now 2-3 overall and 1-1 in CWPA play.
Against Johns Hopkins, a team that defeated BU 7-6 two weeks ago, freshman Elliot Benoist (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Country Day School) led the squad with four goals and one assist to add to his team-high point total. The Bison led 11-8 with over four minutes remaining in the contest, but the Blue Jays scored two goals in the final two minutes to make it a one-goal game. Senior co-captain Ryan McCarty (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Country Day School) also had a solid performance in the contest, netting three goals and grabbing four steals. Classmate and fellow captain David Kennedy (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Country Day School) recorded 12 saves in the game.
A talented Navy team entered the pool for the last game of the evening and jumped out to a 4-1 lead to end the first quarter. After building the advantage to 6-1, Bucknell did manage a score in the second quarter and one in the third, but it was too little, too late, as the Midshipmen took the game, 9-3. Junior Dan Lonnerdal registered four steals in the contest, while Kennedy stopped 15 of the Mids shots.
Bucknell is back in action tomorrow, playing 14th ranked Princeton at 10:30 a.m. before ending the weekend with a 1:30 p.m. game against George Washington.
