LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell junior guard Molly Creamer (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and senior forward Vicki Quimby (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) are two of only five players named to the 2001-02 Preseason All-Patriot League Women's Basketball Team, the league office announced Wednesday.
The Patriot League Player of the Year last season, Creamer led the conference in 2000-01 in scoring for all but three weeks of the season, ending the year with 533 points for a 19.0 ppg average. In addition, the 5-10 guard led the league in assists per game, handing out 5.0 apg through 28 games. With her Player of the Year selection, Creamer became the first Bison to earn the honor in the ten-year history of the league and she was only the second sophomore in conference history to garner the award. A first-team all-league selection as a sophomore, Creamer was also named to the All-Patriot League Second Team and All-Rookie Team as a freshman.
Creamer, who scored in double figures in 25 of 28 games last season and eclipsed the 20-point plateau 14 times, scored a career-high 33 points in late December. Selected as Patriot League Player of the Week on two different occasions, Creamer was named to the All-Tournament teams at both the Cornell Classic and the PNC Wildcat Classic in December. In addition, she picked up Eastern College Women's Basketball Coaches & Media Association Regional Player of the Week honors.
The flashy guard etched her name in the Bucknell record books several times last season, including becoming the first Orange and Blue sophomore to surpass the 1,000 point mark. In just 58 games, Creamer has scored 1,008 points to rank her 12th on the Bucknell all-time scoring lists and 25th on the Patriot League's list. In a game against Cleveland State in early January, she became the first player in over two decades to register a triple-double, scoring 21 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and handing out 10 assists.
Quimby makes her third straight appearance on the Preseason All-Patriot League Team. The 6-0 forward started her career with a PL Rookie of the Year selection and Second-Team honor in 1998-99. As a sophomore, Quimby landed on the all-league first team, before picking up the same accolades last season.
A tri-captain in 2001-02, Quimby led the squad last season for the third year in a row in rebounding, pulling down 8.0 caroms each night out. Her 14.9 ppg were the third best on the team and fifth in the conference. She recorded nine double-doubles on the year and has 28 in her career.
Early in the season, Quimby became the 11th female, and only the second junior, in Bucknell women's basketball history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. She enters the season with 1,197 points, good for eighth on Bucknell's all-time list and 19th on the Patriot League list. In addition, with 692 career rebounds, she stands in seventh place on Bucknell's all-time career rebounding list and falls in at 10th on the conference record chart.
Four-time defending champion Holy Cross was picked to repeat as Patriot League titlist in the preseason poll. The Crusaders garnered 13 of 16 first-place votes and 96 points overall. Bucknell (3) was the only other school to collect a first-place vote, picking up 87 points for second. Lehigh was third with 64 points and league newcomer American accrued 54 points for fourth. Only two points separated Army (48) and Navy (46), and Colgate (32) and Lafayette (21) rounded out the poll.
The Bison return all five starters from a 2000-01 squad that finished with a school record 20 wins, going 20-8 overall and 9-3 in Patriot League play. The Orange and Blue entered the Patriot League Tournament seeded second for the third-straight year, making an early entrance after an 85-69 loss to seventh-seeded Colgate in the first round.
Bucknell opens its 2001-02 campaign in Lewisburg with a 7:30 p.m. game against Albany on November 16.
