PITTSBURGH - Freshman Megan Farrell scored off a feed from junior Lauren Schwarz with 5:33 remaining in the game as the Bucknell University women's soccer team defeated the University of Pittsburgh (1-1) 1-0 in the Bison's season opener at Founders Field in Indianola, Pa.
With just under six minutes left to play, senior Sarah Klang-Glienna brought the ball down the right side of the field and flicked a quick pass to Schwarz in the midfield. Schwarz then found Farrell, who booted a long-range, right-footed shot just over the head of Panther keeper Gretchen Ross and into the upper-left corner of the net for her first collegiate goal. Farrell's game-winning goal was also her only shot of the game.
Pittsburgh out-shot Bucknell 10-2 in the first half and 18-10 for the game but was unable to dent Bison keeper Laurie Purse. Purse withstood a furious Panther offensive attack and was credited with 10 saves. Two of her saves were of the diving variety, and she made another stop on a shot from point-blank range.
The Bison return to action on Wednesday when they travel to St. Francis (Pa.) for another non-league game at 4 p.m.
