Bucknell Men's Soccer Drops One at Monmouth

West Long Branch, N.J. - Junior Nick Taylor (Fairview Park, Ohio/St. Ignatius) scored his team-leading second goal of the season at the 49:24 mark, and senior Nathan Hopfinger (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) scored his first goal of the year just over three minutes later to make the score 2-2 in Bucknell men's soccer action at Monmouth on Tuesday, September 18. The Hawks' Craig Lindquist would tally in the 68th minute to reclaim the lead, and earn a victory for Monmouth in West Long Branch.
The Hawks got goals from freshman Nick Randazzo and sophomore Joe Sellitto in the first half to take the 2-0 advantage into the locker rooms at halftime. Both goals were assisted by Mike Hull.
The Bison, who were outshot by Monmouth nine to five in the first stanza, came out of halftime pushing forward. Junior Elliott Maruffi-Cowley (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) connected with Taylor to cut the lead to 2-1 in Monmouth's favor, before Taylor passed to Hopfinger at the 52:34 mark of the game to knot the contest at 2-2.
Lindquist was able to put the Hawks back in control as he connected on a direct kick from just outside the 18, passed diving Bucknell netminder, Steve Whitaker (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga).
Mike Erskine was able to preserve the victory for Monmouth as he made a pivotal save in the 77th minute. Erskine made two saves on the afternoon, facing 12 Bucknell shots. BU's Whitaker stopped five of the Hawks 15 shots.
Bucknell, which had its largest offensive output of the season, falls to 1-3 on the year with two of those losses coming by a one-goal deficit. The Orange and Blue open Patriot League play with a 7:00 p.m. game at Colgate on Saturday, September 22. The win improves Monmouth's record to 2-3.
