LEWISBURG, Pa. - Michelle Katkowski, a 2001 graduate of University of Pittsburgh, joins the Bucknell women's basketball coaching staff as a graduate assistant to the Bison. "I think the Michelle's experience of playing in the Big East Conference will be a great benefit to the program," commented head women's basketball coach Kathy Fedorjaka. "She has played in a solid program and under the direction of talented coaches and it is always a bonus to receive a young coach who has been mentored in a successful program."
Katkowski was a varsity letterwinner for the Panthers from 1996 to 2000 while playing at the guard position. A Bell Atlantic Scholar Athlete from 1997 to 2000, she was also a member of the Big East Academic All-Star Team in 1999 and 2000, and was a Carson Scholarship recipient in 2000-01.
At the conclusion of her playing career at Pittsburgh, Katkowski devoted her time to serving as an undergraduate student assistant coach with the Panthers from September of 2000 until her appointment at Bucknell. While in that position, she assisted with coaching and on court demonstrations, performed administrative duties concerning daily operations of the basketball office, and wrote, edited and published women's basketball monthly newsletters. Katkowski was also highly involved in the Panther's community service efforts as she coordinated the "Read to Win Program" and organized basketball clinics and summer camps for Pittsburgh.
At Bucknell, Katkowski will be pursuing her master's degree in Education. With the Bucknell women's basketball program, she will be responsible for the exchange of game tapes with opponents, coordinating Bison Ball activities, clinics and halftime promotional events, and will also serve as the academic monitor for the team.
Bucknell has ranked among the nation's leaders in the graduation rate of its student-athletes in recent years, including best-in-the-nation accolades in 1992, 1993 and 1996. During the 2000-01 academic year, Bison student-athletes were awarded seven of the 22 Patriot League Scholar-Athlete citations, which topped the conference for the ninth straight year. Bucknell also claimed a league-high 249 members of the 2000-01 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, which honors student-athletes who achieve a 3.20 grade-point average during the semester coinciding with his/her sport.
