LEWISBURG, Pa. - Pamie Zukowski snapped a 1-1 deadlock with just under 20 minutes to play, lifting Drexel to a 2-1 verdict over Bucknell in a non-league field hockey contest Tuesday afternoon. The season opener for both teams included a one-hour, 42-minute lightning delay with 13 minutes left to play.
Shortly after play resumed, the Bison nearly tied the game when Lisa Bingaman broke in alone, but Drexel goalie Katie Dougherty rushed from her cage and thwarted Bucknell's final scoring chance.
The Dragons assumed an early 1-0 lead when Julie Gahman scored off a scramble in front of the Bucknell goal just 1:31 into the contest. It remained a one-goal affair until Bucknell converted a penalty corner less than two minutes into the second stanza. Lauren Campbell took a feed from Amy Marvel and fired a shot through traffic past Dougherty to knot the game at a goal apiece.
Under darkening skies, Zukowski gave the Dragons the lead back with 19:56 remaining, when she stickhandled through traffic and fired past Bison keeper Sonja Wettergreen. Bucknell called timeout with 13:03 to play, and during the timeout the game was stopped due to lightning.
Wettergreen made eight saves in her season debut, as the Bison were outshot 16-7. Dougherty made two saves for Drexel.
Bucknell hosts Georgetown in another non-league tilt this Friday at 6 p.m. at West Field.
