LEWISBURG, PA -- Bucknell senior Molly Lowe (Hamilton Square, N.J./Steinert), one of the most versatile swimmers to grace the women's swimming & diving program, received a special award at the University's annual Senior Athletic Awards Banquet, sponsored by the Bison Club and held at the University in early May.
Lowe won the Christy Mathewson Award, given to the most outstanding athletes in the senior class. She shared the award with all-American football player Kevin Eiben.
In addition to Lowe and Eiben, several other student-athletes were honored at the banquet.
Lowe had an outstanding career in the pool for the Orange and Blue. She joined just a handful of female swimmers in the history of the Patriot League to earn all-conference honors for four straight years when she received the honor at the championship meet last winter. That honor came on the heals of one of the best team performances at the conference meet by the Bucknell women, as they finished second for the first time since 1995.
Lowe's versatility made it easy for head coach Jerry Foley to insert her into any number of events. In fact, she swam every contestable event possible with the exception of the mile - 13 events all told and a very rare accomplishment. Lowe's name appears in the Bucknell record book a total of 13 times, including as the school record-holder in the 400-Individual Medley (4:30.34 in 1999). A tri-captain during her final season, she is also listed among the top-10 performers in four additional individual events, including second in the 200-IM (2:09.95) and the 200-butterfly (2:06.20). Lowe has also been a part of eight different relays that are among the top-10 all-time performances at Bucknell.
Lowe qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships in each of her four years in the Bison program, and went on to score at that meet each time. She was selected by the Bison coaching staff and her teammates as the Kathy Frazier-Margaret Grunow Award winner, indicative of the Most Outstanding Female Swimmer of the Year, twice during her career.
Bucknell is a highly-selective, privately endowed liberal arts institution with an enrollment of approximately 3,650 undergraduate students. Bucknell competes in NCAA Division I as a member of the Patriot League, along with Army, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, and Navy. Army and Navy do not compete in the league in football. Fordham and Towson are associate members of the league in football and Georgetown will join as a football-only member in 2001. American University will also become an all-sport member in 2001-2002.
In two of the past nine years, Bucknell ranked FIRST in the nation in the graduation rate of its student-athletes, and in the ten years the NCAA survey has been conducted it has never been lower than seventh. In addition, Bucknell ranks third in Division I in the total number of GTE Academic All-America selections, with 100 national Academic All-Americans since 1970.
