Lewisburg, Pa. - The Bucknell softball season came to an end with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday, May 1. The Bison claimed the opener, 5-1, and took the nightcap, 13-5 in six innings.
Game one was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning, when the Bison (19-26-2) put up four runs. Freshman Erin Doyle (Wayne, Pa./Upper Merion) hit a leadoff homer, the first of her career, starting the rally, and senior third baseman Charity Ford (Cogan Station, Pa./Williamsport), playing in the final games of her career, later roped a two-run double. The Mountaineers' (4-32) lone run came on Erica Barone's (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) RBI single in the fourth. Sophomore shortstop Meredith Gill (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) and Ford each had two hits for the Bison, while sophomore pitcher Brandi Porter (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro) tossed a three-hitter and tied the Bison record for strikeouts in a season.
In game two, the Mountaineers broke ahead with a 4-0 lead in the second inning. Barone reached on an error, then Jen Sansevero (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan), Amanda Blizzard (Fairfax, Va./Bishop O'Connell) and Kelly Daugherty (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) singled sandwiched around a fly out. With two outs, rookie Eileen Williams (Herndon, Va./Chantilly) drove in a pair with a single and the Mount led, 4-0.
Bucknell pulled two back in the bottom of the inning on back-to-back doubles by junior outfielder Jenna Demetriades (Nesquehoning, Pa./Tamaqua) and freshman catcher Angela Stackhouse (Muncy, Pa./Hughesville), followed by a run-scoring error. In the fifth, the Bison laced four triples, two by Gill, in exploding for nine runs to take an 11-4 lead. The Bison then pushed a pair across in the sixth to win the game on the eight-run rule, 13-5.
Porter started game two for the Orange and Blue, striking out the second batter she faced to break the school record for strikeouts in a single-season. She got one more before leaving the game, giving her 101 for the season.
Mount senior Heather Macready (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) had a hit in each game to tie the Mount career record of 136 hits, set by Nicki Trumpler from 1996 to 1999.
