Several Track and Field Athletes Compete at the James Madison Invitational

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Members of the Bucknell men's and women's track and field teams were in competition this weekend at the James Madison Invitational, held on Friday and Saturday, May 11-12.
On the women's side, junior Andrea Nyce (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) set a school record in the pole vault, leaping to a height of 11' 11.75 for third place in the event. In the hammer throw, freshman Maria Garcia (Providence, R.I./Hope) placed second with an ECAC qualifying toss of 169' 07.00. On the track, BU sophomore hurdler Khadija Shariff (Lansdowne, Pa./Upper Darby) ran a 1:01.70 in the 400-Meter Intermediate Hurdles, good enough for third place in the event. Junior Kelly McConnell (Danville, Pa./Danville) improved on her personal best in the 1,500-meter run, recording the seventh-best time in school history at 4:42.28.
Freshman Noel Powell (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua Area) had a solid day for the men's team. Powell set a school record in the long jump, placing second with a distance of 24' 08.25, and the rookie recorded a personal best in the 200-meter dash, running to fourth place in a time of 21.88, fifth all-time at Bucknell. In the hammer throw, senior Ryan Stairs (Somerset, Pa./Somerset Area) claimed the gold with a toss of 192' 05.00. Senior Shawn Mathews (Youngstown, N.Y./Lewiston-Porter) placed fifth in the discus throw with a throw of 149' 10.00.
The Bison will be in competition next weekend when the women compete in ECAC's and the men participate in the IC4A's, both at Princeton. The competition is Friday-Sunday, May 18-20.
