LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell University junior Abby Weaver (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) has been named the 2001 Patriot League Women's Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Weaver, a mathematics major with a 3.88 grade-point-average, earned All-Patriot League honors this season by scoring 43 points at the League's championship meet. She helped lead the Orange and Blue to a second-place team finish, their highest since 1995, with a fourth-place finish in the 200-IM, a fifth-place finish in the 50-free, and a fifth-place finish in the 100-free. In addition, she swam on four of the five relay events at the championships, the maximum number an individual may swim under the meet rules.
Weaver was also part of the 800-freestyle relay team that set a school record at the ECAC Championships. She swam the third-fastest time in school history in the 100-free (53.10) and the fourth-fastest in the 200-IM (2:10.42). Weaver captured gold in both the 100- and 200-free in three meets this season, leading the Bison to a 6-3 dual meet record.
Weaver is the third women's swimmer from Bucknell to garner the honor, joining Jeanne Klawon (1993 and 1994) and Allyson Gillespie (1996) in a select group. She is a member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and the Bucknell University Dean's List.
To be eligible for scholar-athlete honors, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore and carry at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA. In addition, he/she must be a starter or key player in his/her sport. The winners are selected in a vote of the League's sport information directors and the Patriot League staff.
