LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior first baseman Russ Lindberg (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) went 3-for-4 and drove in six runs, and senior center fielder Ian Joseph (Novelty, Ohio/West Geauga) broke two Patriot League career records as Bucknell defeated visiting Mount St. Mary's, 7-3, in a non-conference game Wednesday afternoon.
Sophomore right-hander Kevin Burns (West Chester, Pa./Malvern Prep) made his first career start after battling back from a pair of surgeries to his shoulder, and after allowing three runs in the first inning, settled down to pick up his first win of the season. Burns worked a pre-determined four innings, and gave up two earned runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out three.
The Mount (11-30) broke on top when catcher Chris Staub smacked a two-out double to right, scoring two. After a Bison fielding error kept the frame alive, John DiGirolamo singled to score Staub and it was 3-0.
Bucknell (25-15) got one run back in its half of the inning after Joseph walked, stole second and scored on what should have been a groundout to short. With the steal, Joseph became the Patriot League's career leader with 92, breaking the previous mark of 91 set by Fordham's Shawn Harris (1992-94). Joseph stole a second base later in the game, and has 93 with at least six games to play in the season.
The Orange and Blue tied the game at 3-3 in the third inning off Mount starter Brandon Woodward. Joseph reached on an error and stole second. After seniors Brad Gething (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) and John DiBonaventura (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland) walked to load the bases, Lindberg lined a single to left to knock in his second and third runs of the game. Mount kept in the game when Woodward struck out Jeff Peck (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) and Chris Herron (Vienna, Va./Bishop O'Connell) with the bases full to end the inning.
However, Bucknell plated three runs in the fourth to take the lead for good. With one out Joseph ripped a triple to the gap in right center. Gething drew a walk and DiBonaventura was hit by a pitch, setting a school record in the process with 13 HBP's this season, to load the bases. Lindberg stepped to the plate and capitalized with a single up the middle for two RBIs, and then took second when the center fielder's throw went over the third baseman's head for an error. All three runners scored and it was 6-3.
Joseph's run was his third of the day, and allowed him to set a new Patriot League career record with 154 runs scored.
Lindberg accounted for the seventh Bucknell run when he doubled to the gap in left center and scored DiBonaventura from first in the sixth inning.
The Bucknell bullpen worked five scoreless innings in relief of Burns. Junior Blane Sharpless (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) and freshman Matt Daley (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) each worked two innings, while closer Gregg Farmery (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney) closed the game out in the ninth.
The Bison return to action tomorrow when they host Towson University in a non-conference game beginning at 3:30 p.m.
