Philadelphia, Pa. - This weekend the Bucknell crew team participated in the Murphy Cup Regatta hosted by Temple University on the Schuylkill River. Four Bucknell boats competed in the regatta and came away with several strong finishes.
The Novice Men's 8 rowed to a 3rd place finish in their preliminary race to easily advance to the final round of racing. The men rowed a strong time of 6:43.88 in the final heat to take sixth place in a race won by a boat from Marist. Sitting in the coxswain's seat was freshman Justin Faden (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) and doing the muscle work were freshmen Kyle Goodwin (Newfoundland, N.J./Morris Knolls), Will Hart (Sandusky, Ohio/Sandusky), Mark Harris (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield), Matt Albrecht (Westerlo, N.Y./Berne-Knox-Westerlo), Raphael Crowley (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles), John Luthi (Madison, N.J./Madison), Ryan Sexton (Bordentown, N.J./Peddie School) and Rob Tidmore (Warsaw, Ind./Warsaw Community). The other men's boat to compete at the Murphy Cup was the Varsity Lightweight 4, which raced in the heavyweight competition and missed qualifying for the finals by four seconds to a boat from Penn state.
The Bucknell women's boats had a very strong regatta as the Novice Women's 1st 8 finished in third with a time of 7:19.05, losing to boats from Temple and George Mason. Keeping the rhythm for this boat was freshman coxswain Cristinia Meng (East Norwich, N.Y./St. Anthony) and rowing were freshmen Karen Schuyler (Avondale, Pa./St. Marks), Rebecca Newman (Hope Valley, R.I./Chariho Regional), Kate Boschen (Media, Pa./Penncrest), Margaret Coates (Stamford, Conn./King & Low-Heywood), Maura Kroh (York, Pa./York Suburban), Laura McWilliams (Wellesley Hills, Mass./Wellesley), Lynn Hootman (Butler, Pa./Shady Side Academy), and sophomore Lisa Baranik (Patton, Pa./Cambria Heights). Since there was no novice race, the BU Novice Women's Lightweight 8 was forced to compete in the varsity race and fared extremely well come in 3rd place out of five boats with a 7:39.27 clocking.
The Bucknell crew team will compete next weekend at the MIRA Spring Regatta atthe Orchard Beach Lagoon in New Rochelle, N.Y. on Saturday, April 28. The team will then head to Holy Cross for the Patriot League Championships on Sunday, April 29.
