Outdoor Track and Field Teams Participate at Susquehanna Invitational

SELINSGROVE, Pa. - The Bucknell outdoor men's and women's track and field teams participated in the Susquehanna Invitational on Saturday, March 31.
On the men's side, the Bison were well represented in the hammer throw, picking up first, second and eighth place. Senior Ryan Stairs (Somerset, Pa./Somerset Area) won the event with a toss of 178'8". Coming in second was sophomore Adam Kaufman (Bridgetown, N.J./Saint Marks) with a personal best throw of 165'2", which also moves him from 10th place on Bucknell's all-time list into a tie for sixth. Freshman Steve Finlan (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Lenape) was BU's other place-winner, recording a personal-best toss of 105'3". In the men's discus, senior Shawn Mathews (Youngstown, N.Y./Lewiston-Porter) threw an IC4A qualifying toss of 160'1", coming in second in the event.
On the field, the Bucknell "A" relay team qualified for IC4A's in the 4X100 with a second place time of 42.79. The "A" relay squad turned in a gold medal performance in the 4X400 with a time of 3:21.45.
For the women, junior Andrea Nyce (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) set a school record in the pole vault with a first-place leap of 11'7", bettering her own record by one inch. Junior Samantha Klotz (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) recorded the second-best jump all-time at Bucknell, placing third at the Invitational with a personal-best jump of 9'6". Freshman Abigail Bouzan-Kaloustia (Orrington, Maine/Brewer) came in seventh in the event with a personal record jump of 8'6", which is also third best all-time at BU.
The Bison were well represented in the hammer throw, taking four of the top seven spots. Freshman Maria Garcia (Providence, R.I./Hope) took the gold medal with a toss of 160', while freshman Laura Schaffer (Drums, Pa./Hazleton) placed second with a throw of 136'5". Freshman Erin Lee (Olean, N.Y./Olean) picked up another first place finish for the Orange and Blue, leading the pack with a discus throw of 130'9".
In the field events, junior Stephanie Bango (Smethport, Pa./Smethport) set a meet record in the 800-meters, winning in a time of 2:13.31, outdistancing the second place winner, senior Laura Ryan (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon), by nearly five seconds. Sophomore Theresa Dennis (Wilkes Barre, Pa./Hanover Area) took the gold in the 5,000-meter race, clocking in at 18:15.69, while freshman Jamie Lilien (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) claimed first in the 100 high hurdles in a time of 15:46, and sophomore Khadija Shariff (Lansdowne, Pa./Upper Darby) claimed the 400 intermediate hurdles title in a time of 1:03.93, narrowly missing a meet record by .42 tenths of a second. The Bucknell "A" relay team set a meet record in the 4X400, finishing in a time of 3:55.40.
Bucknell will compete next at the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Va., on Friday and Saturday, April 6-7.
