Penn State Tops Bucknell on the Baseball Diamond, 6-1

State College, Pa. - Penn State opened up its home schedule after playing its first 23 games on the road with a 6-1 win over Bucknell on Wednesday afternoon at Beaver Field. Penn State starting pitcher Pete Yodis (Buckingham, Pa.) tossed a season-high eight innings while earning his second win of the season.
The win improves the Nittany Lions' overall record to 9-15, while Bucknell slips to 10-9 with the loss.
After both squads held each other scoreless over the first three stanzas, Bucknell claimed the game's first lead at 1-0 on a run-scoring groundout by Chris Herron (Vienna, Va./Bishop O'Connell), which plated Russ Lindberg (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) who led off the frame with a base hit.
Penn State claimed the lead for good with a pair of runs in the sixth. Doug Rodio (Cherry Hill, N.J.) began the scoring when he drove home Chris Wright (State College, Pa.), who led off the frame with a double, with an RBI single to right. Donnie Wright (Bethesda, Md.) scored the Lions' final run of the inning as he scampered home on a sacrfice fly by Chris Netwall (Allentown, Pa.).
The Lions padded their lead with a four-run eighth that was sparked by Donnie Wright, who blasted a two-run home run to right field, his team-leading sixth of the season. Mike DeRenzo (Murrysville, Pa.) and Willie Melendez (Cayey, Puerto Rico) accounted for the final two runs of the rally as each tallied a RBI single.
Yodis (2-4) earned the win after tossing a season-high eight innings and limiting the Bison to one run and six hits while fanning five. Zachary Allen (Port Royal, Pa./Juniata)(0-2) took the loss for Bucknell as he allowed three runs and eight hits over seven innings.
Rodio paced Penn State at the plate in the win as he finished 4-for-4, including two doubles, with an RBI. Donnie Wright finished with a pair of hits, two runs and two RBI. Ian Joseph (Novelty, Ohio/West Geauga) led Bucknell in the loss with two hits.
Bucknell returns to action this weekend, opening the conference portion of its schedule with doubleheaders against Lafayette on both Saturday and Sunday. Game 1 begins at 12:00 noon each day at Bucknell Field.
