Lewisburg, Pa. - Senior co-captain Brad Gething (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) singled to center field with one out in the bottom of the ninth to score the game-winning run in a 5-4 Bucknell win, capping a doubleheader sweep for the Bison over Slippery Rock on Sunday afternoon. Bucknell (10-8) won the opener 3-0.
The Bison battled back from 3-0 and 4-3 deficits in the game to win their third straight and take three of four from Slippery Rock (7-11) over the weekend. Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, the Orange and Blue would tie the game on a clutch two-out single up the middle by senior third baseman John DiBonaventura (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland). Ian Joseph (Novelty, Ohio/West Geauga), who led off the frame with a single, scored easily from third base, forcing extra innings.
Bucknell freshman Ben Stoll (Swampscott, Mass./Swampscott), who made his first collegiate start at shortstop, began the fateful ninth with a base hit to right. After a sacrifice bunt by Joseph moved Stoll to second, Slippery Rock intentionally walked Eric Fishman (Springfield, N.J./Jonathan Dayton) hoping to set up a double play. The strategy backfired as Gething drilled a single up the middle and Stoll slid across the plate just before the tag with the game-winning run.
Junior right-hander Gregg Farmery (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney), who came on in relief in the sixth and earned his second win of the season, held Slippery Rock in check, allowing just two hits in four innings of work.
Slippery Rock jumped out to a 3-0 lead with two runs in the first off Bison starter B>R.J. Grant (Ardsley, Pa./Ardsley) and another in the third. The Rock tallied both runs in the first without the benefit of a hit, capitalizing on four walks and a Bison error. A double by Steve Wolota in the third drove home Slippery Rocks third run.
Bucknell closed the gap to 3-2 in the fourth with a pair of runs as Slippery Rock committed three miscues in the frame. Russ Lindberg (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) had the only hit in the inning for the Orange and Blue.
DiBonaventura tied the game at 3-3 with a base hit in the fifth, plating Gething who had reached on a fielders choice and then stolen second base.
DiBonaventura (2-4), Lindberg (2-3) and Stoll (2-4) all collected a pair of hits for the Bison.
In game one, Bucknell starter Ross Aron (Westport, Conn./Kent School) was in complete control from start to finish. He gave up just two hits, walked just one, and struck out seven en route to a complete-game win.
The Bison scored three times in the fifth off Slippery Rock starter Bundy Fulmer to give Aron all the support he would need. Larry Scheetz (Newtown, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) singled home Pat Cann (Mill Valley, Calif./Marin Catholic), who led off the inning with a walk and was sacrificed to second. Gething then tripled to right-center scoring Scheetz to make it 2-0. Senior Kevin Eiben (Delta, British Columbia/Vancouver College) stepped to the plate and followed with a single, plating Gething.
Lindberg was Bucknell's only player with multiple hits in the game, finishing 2-for-3 with a double.
Bucknell will be back in action on Tuesday, March 27, when it travels to State College for a single game against Penn State at 3:00 p.m.
