Bison Stickmen Win Fifth Contest Of 2001 Against Mount St. Mary's, 14-10

Lewisburg, Pa. - Sophomore Dennis Geraghty (Kings Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's) led the Bison through monsoon-like conditions to a 14-10 victory over Mount St. Mary's (2-3) by tallying a career-high six goals. The Herd improves to 5-1 on the season and has now defeated the Mount in six consecutive contests since the beginning of the series in 1996.
Bucknell struck first with a goal midway through the first quarter off the stick of senior Michael Cheng (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park), his fifth of the season. However, the Mountaineers went on a run tallying three straight goals and would eventually finish the first period with a 5-3 advantage. The Mount used a balanced offensive attack to take its first quarter lead, five different players scored in the period.
The Orange and Blue narrowed the Mount's lead to one with a quick goal from Geraghty, assisted by sophomore Rob Lane (Boonton Twp., N.J., Mt. Lakes), at 14:07 in the second quarter. Momentum was short-lived as senior Nick DeFelice (Towson, Md.) scored twice for the visitors to give the Mount a three-goal lead. Lane found the back of the net with 2:31 on the clock to put the Bison down by two going into the locker room at halftime, 7-5.
Halftime turned out to be beneficial for the Bison as they rallied in the third quarter and lit up the Mount St. Mary's defense for six goals. Geraghty and sophomore Andrew Sanders (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) led the charge with two goals apiece while Cheng and Lane each scored their second goals of the game. The Bison dominated the Mountaineers in the third quarter by out shooting them 11-3 and had the advantage in ground balls, 14-10.
Facing a three-goal deficit entering the fourth quarter, 11-8, Mount St. Mary's responded to the pressure by winning the face-off and finding DeFelice in front of the goal for his fourth of the contest. The Mountaineers would tally two more goals in the quarter to cut the Herd's lead to one but that would be as close as they would get. Bucknell's defense tightened the clamps on Mount's offense and sophomore goalkeeper Justin Sussman (Towson, Md./Friends Academy) made two crucial saves during the visitors run at the beginning of the quarter. Sophomore Andrew Copelan (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) scored BU's 12th goal and Geraghty added two insurance goals for the Bison to bring the game to its final of 14-10.
Sussman stopped seven shots in the contest while allowing 10 goals and also recorded seven ground balls. Junior Tom Dryer (Annapolis, Md.) stopped 17 Bucknell shots in the contest for Mount St. Mary's.
Rounding out the scoring for Bucknell was sophomore Kelly Hogue (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning West) with one goal and two assists. Mount St. Mary's had six players score once, led by senior Bryan Cole (Columbia, Md.) who also tallied three handouts.
Mount St. Mary's will play next on Saturday, March 24, when it hosts Sacred Heart University. The Orange and Blue, now 5-1 overall in 2001, will remain at home to host Patriot League foe, Lafayette, on Saturday, March 24, for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
