LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's lacrosse team won for the second time in a row, holding off a late surge by visiting Ohio to defeat the Bobcats, 9-8, in college women's lacrosse action on Tuesday, March 20.
The Bison got on the board first when senior tri-captain Ashley Evans (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) scored one of her game-high four goals just 1:12 into the contest. Ohio responded 26 seconds later, and again at the 27:56 mark of the first half to jump ahead, 2-1. The two teams exchanged goals over the next three minutes before the Orange and Blue took a 4-3 lead on another A. Evans goal with 21:49 left in the half. Bucknell built its advantage to 5-3 before the Bobcats came storming back with three unanswered scores in the final 13:04 of the frame to carry a 6-5 lead into the intermission.
The Bucknell defense went to work in the second half, holding Ohio without a goal for the first eight minutes of the frame, while the offense did its job, staking the Bison to a 9-6 lead behind four unanswered goals. The Bobcats made it interesting, cutting the lead to 9-7 with a goal at the 11:50 mark, and closing within one with 1:09 remaining, but the Orange and Blue held off the comeback attempt to come away with the victory in their home opener.
In addition to her four goals, A. Evans finished the game with one assist. Sophomore Suzanne Raffaele (Springfield, Pa./Archmere Academy) continued her strong play, netting two goals in the victory. Junior Melissa Montefusco (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) had a team-high three assists, as well as one goal.
Senior tri-captain Annie Richards (Pt. Pleasant, N.J./Lawrenceville School) played the entire game in net for BU, recording 11 saves. Jen Cassidy was between the pipes for Ohio, stopping 13 Bison shots.
Bucknell improves to 2-3 overall and will travel to Colgate to open Patriot League play on Friday, March 23, at 7:00 p.m. The game can be heard live on the internet at www.BucknellBison.com.
