ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Bucknell women's basketball season has come to an unexpected end as the Bison, seeded second in the Patriot League tournament, were upset by seventh seeded Colgate, 85-69, in the first round of the tournament on Friday, March 2, at the United States Naval Academy.
It was a bittersweet night for sophomore Molly Creamer (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham), named the Patriot League Player of the Year at the banquet held in conjunction with the tournament the night before. Creamer entered the contest needing 17 points to become the 12th female, and first sophomore in school history to score 1,000 career points. The 5-10 guard finished with a game-high 25 points in the losing effort, giving her 1,008 points in her young career.
Bucknell opened up a nine-point lead, 13-4, with 13:48 to go in the first half thanks in part to a 9-0 run keyed by seven points from junior Kate Rounsley (Lock Haven, Pa./Lock Haven). Colgate mounted a 10-2 run over the next two minutes to get within one, 15-14, and the Red Raiders kept the pressure on before taking the lead for good, 22-21, with 6:10 left in the frame. Colgate went on to extend its lead to as many as 14 in the half, carrying a 45-31 lead into the locker room.
The Bison cut the lead to 11 on three different occasions in the second half, but Colgate always seemed to have an answer. The Red Raiders held a 19-point lead with 0:18 left in the game before a three-pointer by Creamer created the final deficit of 16.
The Orange and Blue, who finished the year with a school record 20 wins and eight losses, also end the year as the highest scoring team in school history.
Rounsley finished the game with career-highs in both points and rebounds, recording the first double double of her career with 22 points and 11 caroms. Also in double figures scoring was junior Vicki Quimby (Wilson, Pa./West Lawn) with 10 points.
