FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Bucknell softball team played to a 4-4 tie in eight innings against Radford on Wednesday, March 14, at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. With the tie, Bucknell moves to 4-2-1 on the season.
The Bison struck first against the Highlanders, a team they had lost to, 2-1, on Tuesday, March 13. Junior outfielder Lauren Titus (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland) drew a walk to open the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore shortstop Meredith Gill (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll), who finished the game 2-for-4 with a double, sacrificed Titus to second to put the runner in scoring position. With two outs, junior first baseman Kelly Dugan (Mt. Holly, N.J./Rancocas Valley) doubled to right centerfield to score Titus and give Bucknell a 1-0 lead.
The Orange and Blue carried the 1-0 cushion into the fifth inning when Radford took the lead with two runs on two hits in the frame. The Highlanders extended their advantage to 4-1 when they opened the sixth inning with back-to-back home runs.
Bucknell responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame to cut the Radford lead to one, 4-3. After holding the Highlanders scoreless in the top half of the seventh inning, the Orange and Blue were down to their last at bat. Senior co-captain Stephanie Morgan (Allentown, Pa./Dieruff) started the inning with a single through the left side. Two outs later, Bucknell scored on a passed ball to tie up the contest, 4-4. BU clubbed three straight singles to load the bases, but the Highlanders got out of the jam to send the game into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth with the international tie-breaker in effect, Bucknell alertly threw out the runner going to third to get the crucial first out. The Bison got out of the inning without allowing a run, but could not capitalize on their half of the inning and the game was called in a 4-4 tie due to time constraints.
In addition to Gill, Dugan, junior designated player Heather Janowski (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) and junior co-captain Jenna Demetriades (Nesquehoning, Pa./Tamaqua) each went 2-for-4 in the contest.
