Kings Point, N.Y. - The Bucknell men's lacrosse team got back on the winning track this afternoon as it defeated the Stony Brook Seawolves (0-3), 14-8, at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Leading the Orange and Blue offensive onslaught were sophomores Kelly Hogue (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning West) and Dennis Geraghty (Kings Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's) with three and four goals, respectively.
The Seawolves opened the game quickly by taking an early 1-0 lead after a goal by junior Kevin Pall in the first minute of play. The Herd responded well to the early goal by ripping off three straight scores in a matter of 1:13 at the midway point of the first quarter. Tallying goals for the Orange and Blue were sophomores Rob Lane (Boonton Twp., N.J./Mt. Lakes), John Terracciano (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) and senior Mark Juelis (Westfield, N.J./Westfield). Stony Brook cut the lead back to one, 3-2, after a goal by Matt Toner but two goals by sophomore Andrew Sanders (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) put the Bison up 5-2 after the first period.
The Bison dominated the second quarter as well, 5-3, and took a 10-5 lead into the halftime break. Hogue and Geraghty were the only two Bucknell players to do any scoring in the second quarter as Hogue tallied three goals and Geraghty scored twice. Entering the third quarter, Bucknell came out firing two quick goals in the first five minutes of the period. The Bison never looked back as they would score two more goals before the end of the game to guarantee the 14-8 victory.
Lane finished the game with two goals while Sanders ended up recording two goals and two assists to lead Bucknell with four points. Senior Michael Cheng (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park) handed out two assists while sophomore Andrew Copelan (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) and junior Chris Decker (Heritage, Colo./Heritage) each had one assist. Rounding out the scoring for the Herd was sophomore Chris Cutillo (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) with one goal.
Recording his third victory between the pipes for the Bison was sophomore Justin Sussman (Towson, Md./Friends Academy). Sussman finished the contest with 12 saves and six goals against in 56 minutes of play in the crease. The Bucknell goalkeepers faced a total of 28 shots compared to the 50 shots faced by Stony Brook.
The Herd (3-1) will take their 1-0 Patriot League record to West Point, N.Y. for their next contest against Army on Saturday, March 17, at 1:30 p.m. Live broadcast of this contest will be available on the Bison Sports Network, WMLP 1380 AM, and also on the web, www.bucknellbison.com.
