LEWISBURG, PA -- Bucknell women's basketball player Molly Creamer (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) has been named the 2000-01 Patriot League Player of the Year and freshman Desire Almind (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional) picked up the 2000-01 Patriot League Rookie of the Year award. In addition, junior Vicki Quimby (Wilson, Pa./West Lawn) joined both on the All-Patriot League Team. The all-league team and major individual award winners were announced at a banquet held by the Patriot League in conjunction with the 2000-01 women's basketball tournament at Navy Thursday evening.
With her Patriot League Player of the Year selection, Creamer becomes the first player from Bucknell to earn the honor in the ten-year history of the league. She is only the second sophomore in conference history to garner the award.
Creamer followed up an extremely successful rookie season with an equally successful sophomore campaign. An All-Patriot League Second-Team and All-Rookie selection in 1999-2000, Creamer led the conference in 2000-01 in scoring for all but three weeks of the season. In addition, the 5-10 guard led the league in assists per game, handing out 5.07 apg through 27 regular-season games. Creamer was named to the All-Tournament teams at both the Cornell Classic and the PNC Wildcat Classic in December, and she was named the Patriot League Player of the Week twice throughout the year. In addition, she picked up Eastern College Women's Basketball Coaches & Media Association Regional Player of the Week honors. In a game against Cleveland State in early January, Creamer became the first Bucknell player in over two decades to register a triple-double, scoring 21 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and handing out 10 assists in the game. Creamer, averaging 18.8 points per game, needs just 17 points entering the tournament to become the 12th female, and first sophomore, in school history to score 1,000 points.
Almind becomes the third player in Bucknell history to earn the Patriot League Rookie of the Year award, and the second in the last three years. In addition, she earned a spot on the all-rookie team and all-league second-team.
Almind made an early impression on the Bucknell squad, earning a starting role just two games into the season. In just her second game in the Orange and Blue uniform, she scored 25 points in a Bucknell victory over Hampton. In early December, Almind earned a spot on the All-Tournament team at the Cornell Classic. A six-time Rookie of the Week selection, she has been second on the team in scoring for the majority of the year and is currently tossing in 15.7 points per game. Almind becomes the third rookie in school history to be named to both the all-rookie team and the second-team all-league, just one year after Creamer (1999-2000) and two years after Quimby (1998-99) accomplished the feat.
Quimby makes her third-straight appearance on the all-league team, earning first-team honors for the second year in a row. The 1998-99 Rookie of the Year, Quimby leads the squad for the third year in a row in rebounding, pulling down 8.1 caroms each night out. Her 15.1 ppg are third best on the team and fifth in the Patriot League. The 6-0 forward has recorded nine double-doubles on the year and has 28 in her career. Earlier this season, she became the 11th female, and only the second junior, in Bucknell women's basketball history to reach the 1,000-point plateau.
Creamer, Almind and Quimby have been key factors in the Bison posting the best record in school history, becoming the first team to reach the 20-win plateau. At 20-7 overall and 9-3 in the Patriot League, the Orange and Blue enter the tournament as the second seed for the third year in a row. Bucknell will face Colgate in its first-round game at the tournament on Friday, March 2, at 5:30 p.m. The winner of that game will then face the winner of the Army/Navy game in a semifinal matchup on Saturday at 9:30 p.m.
