LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell's quest for the first 20-win season in school history has been put on hold. For the second year in a row, Lehigh came to Bucknell and handed the Bison a loss late in the season in college women's basketball action on Wednesday, February 21. The Mountain Hawks connected on 45.9% (28-61) of their shots from the floor in handing BU a 74-67 setback.
Lehigh took it to the Orange and Blue right from the start, going up 6-2 just 2:45 into the contest. The Bison put together a 6-0 run to take their only lead of the game at 8-6 on a Vicki Quimby (Wilson, Pa./West Lawn) layup with 16:02 remaining in the half. The Mountain Hawks promptly responded with a 17-4 run that spanned five and a half minutes and gave them an 11-point cushion with over half of the frame remaining. As the game of runs was quickly developing, Bucknell outscored Lehigh 14-5 over the next four minutes to get within two, 28-26, but the Mountain Hawks answered with a 14-4 spurt to go up by 12 with just over a minute remaining. The Bison would manage to score on their next two possessions to enter the locker room down by eight, 42-34.
Bucknell used a 6-2 run to open the second frame and trail by just four 2:50 into it. Five minutes later, the Bison were down by just three, 54-51, after a made jumper by junior Kate Rounsley (Lock Haven, Pa./Lock Haven). A free throw by Lehigh with 12:06 left on the game clock gave the Mountain Hawks a four-point lead, 55-51. Bucknell had several opportunities to cut into the Lehigh lead, but the offense went dry for over four minutes as the Mountain Hawks extended their advantage to seven, 58-51. The Orange and Blue would cut the lead to four several times, but Lehigh always seemed to have an answer.
The Bison used one last push, outscoring Lehigh 8-3 to cut it to two, 69-67, with 1:01 left in the game, but the Mountain Hawks hit a jumper and made three-of-four from the free throw line in the final 34 seconds to secure the win.
Rounsley and sophomore Molly Creamer (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) led BU with 15 points each. Also in double figures was Quimby with 14. Lehigh's Anne Tierney led all scorers with 23 points.
Bucknell falls to 19-7 overall and ends the year at 9-3 in the Patriot League. The Orange and Blue conclude the regular season with a game at Albany on February 24. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The Mountain Hawks even their season at 13-13 and move to 6-5 in conference play.
