HAMILTON, N.Y. - Bucknell University's swimming & diving teams turned in outstanding performances at the 2001 Patriot League Championships which were held at Colgate's Lineberry Natatorium over the weekend. The women's team recorded its best team finish since the 1995 championships, placing second just 36.5 points behind Lehigh with a total of 601 points. The men's team finished third for the sixth straight year with 571.5 points.
Although there was not a single gold medal winner for the women at the championships, they turned in 22 individual performances that ranked on the school's all-time top-10 list, including two school records. Freshman Daniela Faas (Ludwigshafen, Germany) finished second in the 500-free with a new school-record time of 5:02.71, and junior Barbara Morgan (Toms River, N.J.) turned in a school record swim in the prelims of the 200-breast with a time of 2:28.11. In addition, the 800-free relay team consisting of Faas, freshman Krisztina Poda (Bekescsaba, Hungary), senior Megan Jones (Glendale, Calif.) and sophomore Rebecca Dolan (Pine Forge, Pa.) set a school record with a time of 7:50.16. Four other relays for the Bison also broke the top-10 performance list.
The men were led by the standout performance of junior Chris Neary (Philadelphia, Pa.) who won gold in both the 50-free and the 100-fly, and if not for a freak occurrence would have captured the 100-free. In the prelims for that event, his goggles came away from his face and filled with water, obscuring his vision. He was the last of the 16 qualifiers for the evening session with a time of 49.29. Neary went on to win the consolation race with a time of 45.45 - a mark that surpassed the gold medal time of 45.96 swum by Army's Lucas Meyers.
Neary won the 50-free in 20.65 and the 100-fly in 49.63, and if not for his mishap would have claimed the Swimmer of the Meet honors.
The men had 17 individual performances that ranked on the school's all-time top-10, including one school record. Sophomore Stephen Schwanhausser (Ridgefield, Conn.) set a new school mark with a time of 2:07.08 in the prelims of the 200-breast. Three of the men's relays were among the top-10 all-time performances, including the gold medal swims by the four men [Neary, Peter Garvin (Silver Spring, Md.), John Ferriter (Yorktown, Va.), Jeff Sharpe (New Canaan,Conn.)] that comprised the 200-free and 400-free teams.
The Bucknell teams will be in action again later this month when they compete at the ECAC Open Swimming & Diving Championships.
