13th Annual Winter Classic A Successful Endeavor For Track & Field Team

Lewisburg, Pa. - This afternoon the Bucknell men's and women's indoor track & field teams hosted the 13th annual Winter Classic in Gerhard Fieldhouse. In a non-scoring meet, 19 schools from as far away as California traveled to Lewisburg, Pa. for the event.
In the women's event's, six Bison put themselves in the record books with marks good enough to put them on the Bucknell top-ten performer's charts. Junior LaTonya McSwain (Cleveland, Ohio/Hawken) ran in the 400-meter dash for the first time this season. McSwain finished fifth in the race with a time of 59.31. Her time is the fourth best time recorded in BU history. In the 800-meter run, senior captain Laura Ryan (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) crossed the finish line second with a 2:17.60 clocking. Ryan's time in the 800-meter run is seventh now in the top-ten performer's list. Two Bison ran solid races in the 200-meter dash and put themselves in the fifth and seventh slots on the BU charts, respectively. Sophomore Charity Brady (Warren, Ohio/Warren G. Harding) ran the 200-meter dash in 26.21 while her classmate, Edwina Bourn (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy), finished with a time of 26.51.
In the field event's, freshman Erin Lee (Olean, N.Y./Olean) cracked the top-ten with a toss of 44'6". The throw puts Lee in the tenth spot all-time at Bucknell. Under the tutelage of coach Joe Klim, junior Samantha Klotz (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) now is tied for third all-time in the pole vault after clearing a height of 10'4" this afternoon.
Not to be overshadowed by the women's team, three Bucknell men also had performances in the meet worthy of top-ten performer's chart status. Freshman Jeff Arek (Shrewsbury, N.J./Red Bank Regional) cleared a height of 15'3" in the pole vault to take second place and tie for fifth on the Bucknell performer's charts. In the 200-meter dash, sophomore Matt Solomon (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) placed third in the event with a time of 22.78. Solomon's time in the 200-meter dash is the seventh fastest time recorded by an individual at Bucknell. Rounding out the record-breakers for the men's squad was freshman Noel Powell (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) as he became the sixth best leaper at BU with a mark of 23'2 ?" in the long jump.
This weekend's track meet was a final test run for the up and coming Patriot League Championships to be held on February 16-18, at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Currently the Bucknell indoor track teams own nine of the best marks in the Patriot League this season.
