LEWISBURG, Pa. - Sophomore Stacy Finley scored a close-range shot in the 101st minute, and the Navy women's soccer defeated Bucknell University 1-0 in overtime at West Field this afternoon.
With the win, Navy (15-4-1, 6-1-0) clinched the Patriot League regular season championship, and earned the right to host the league tournament, to be held on Nov. 9-11. The Bison, who have clinched a berth in the Patriot League tournament, dropped their second straight match and fell to 9-6-0 and 4-2-0 in league play.
Finley's shot was the end result of a corner kick from Navy senior Melissa Rains. After a Bucknell player headed the corner out of the box, freshman Stephanie Parker regained possession for Navy and fed the ball to freshman Xochitl Piedra. She then found Finley in the right side of the box, who booted her 14th goal of the season for the game-winner.
Navy's goal was the first allowed by Bucknell keeper Laurie Purse in over seven halves. Purse finished the afternoon with two saves, while senior Kate Macfarlane made seven stops in net to earn her seventh shutout of the season.
The Bison out-shot Navy 15-14 for the game, and had several scoring opportunities in the closing minutes of regulation. In the 88th minute, Bucknell had a two-on-one breakaway, but sophomore Savannah Rennels was called for an offsides violation. Then with around 30 seconds remaining, Rennels' shot from point-blank range sailed slightly to the left and out of bounds.
Bucknell will travel to Navy on Nov. 9-11 for the Patriot League tournament to face an opponent yet to be determined.
