LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell University swimming and diving teams were victorious in their home-opener this afternoon against Drexel University at Freas-Rooke Pool. The women's team outscored the Dragons 203-70, while the men's team picked up a 176-123 victory.
The women's team won every event, and leading the charge for the second week in a row was freshman Jackie Feinthel, who continued to show flashes of brilliancy in just her second collegiate meet. After winning three events in Bucknell's season-opening win at Army last week, Feinthel fell just one-tenth of a second short of breaking the Freas-Rooke Pool record in the 400 IM. Feinthel won the event in 4:39.68, nearly nine seconds faster than the second-place finisher. In addition, she also placed first as an exhibition competitor in the 100 fly.
Freshman Jamie Flick, sophomore Sarah Petcavage, senior Abby Weaver, and freshman Ashley Aiken came away with a pair of individual victories apiece. While Flick touched the wall first in the 100 and 200 breast, Petcavage captured both the 1 and 3 meter diving events. Weaver was triumphant in the 50 and 100 free, and Aiken won the 200 fly while taking the 200 IM as an exhibition competitor.
Other Bison who picked up one individual win on the afternoon were sophomore Robin Gibson (200 free), freshman Tricia Rado (100 back), junior Darby Golino (200 back) and sophomore Daniela Faas (500 free).
Swimming for the victorious 200 medley relay team were Golino, Flick, Aiken and freshman Leslie Rice, while the exhibition 800 free relay squad of Feinthel, Flick, junior Becky Dolan and sophomore Krisztina Poda placed first as well.
Sophomore Michael Harrigan and senior Chris Neary picked up a pair of individual victories to lead the men's team. Harrigan captured the 200 fly and 500 free, and Neary came out on top in the 50 free and 100 fly. Other Bison winning one event were junior Matt Hallowell (400 IM), junior Stelios Saffos (100 back), sophomore Peter Garvin (100 free) and junior Stephen Schwanhausser (200 breast).
Bucknell won both relay events as well. Harrigan, Saffos, Neary and freshman Jake Thieman placed first in the 200 medley relay, and Harrigan, sophomore Michael Willats, Hallowell and Garvin tamed the Dragons in the 800 free relay.
Both teams return to action next Saturday at the Penn State Invitational.
