LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior wide receiver Kyle Harris (Provo, Utah/Timpview H.S.) has been named to the Verizon Academic All-District 2 First Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). A history major with a 3.92 cumulative grade-point average, Harris now becomes eligible for national Academic All-America honors.
Harris has been a significant contributor to the Bison football program for the last two seasons since transferring from Ricks (Idaho) Junior College. In 2000, he was Bucknell's second leading receiver with 35 catches for 398 yards and one touchdown, and following the season he earned the Stuart M. Smith Award as the team's top newcomer.
Slowed by an ankle injury early this season, Harris remained in the wide receiver rotation but was limited to three catches for 26 yards for the 6-4 Bison. He also spent part of the season as Bucknell's punt returner.
Harris spends much of his off-the-field time working with young boys and girls through the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. In his spare time he serves as a youth instructor and motivational speaker, and he teaches weekly lessons to teens in his congregation. Harris makes frequent speaking engagements around Central Pennsylvania.
A future law student, Harris completed a two-year, full-time church mission (1996-98) in Southern New Jersey. The 24-year-old Dean's List student is married with a one-year-old daughter.
In order to be eligible for the Academic All-America team, a student-athlete must be a starter or key reserve and carry a minimum 3.20 cumulative GPA.
Bucknell has achieved tremendous success in the Verizon Academic All-America program over the last 30 years. Bucknell has claimed 100 national Academic All-Americans, a figure that ranks third behind only Nebraska and Notre Dame among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has also ranked in the top 10 in the nation in graduation rates of its student-athletes in each of the last 10 years, including two years in which it ranked first nationally.
